The Sacred City of Caral (approximately 4600 years old) is considered the cradle of American archaeology as it is among one of the 6 oldest civilizations in the world, being discovered in 1996 in the Valley of Supe by archaeologist Ruth Chavi, changing the course of pre-Hispanic Peruvian history.

What's Inside?

Within the Sacred City of Caral, we can find impressive monumental structures such as the Great Pyramid, the Amphitheater Temple, Gallery Pyramid, Quarry Pyramid, Huaca Pyramid, Minor Pyramid, and the Circular Altar Temple, as well as various residential sectors. These structures were the foundation of the society of the multiple cultures that developed in Peru, contemporary with great civilizations such as Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Location of Caral

Caral is located in the department of Lima, province of Barranca, Supe district, in the middle valley of the Supe River, 206 kilometers north of Lima.

It has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging between 28° and 18°

How to Get to Caral?

You can reach Caral in two ways, by bus or by private car.

By car, head to kilometer 184 where you will find signs that will guide you (follow them), this road is approximately 23 kilometers long, leading you to the town of Caral. Turn right towards the detour to the pedestrian bridge and tourist stop. Once there, walk towards the Caral citadel as cars are not allowed beyond that point, which will take you about 20 minutes on foot.

If you go by bus, take a bus to Barranca and get off at the Supe market, then one block away you will find shared taxis, which will drop you off at the pedestrian bridge, from there you must walk to the reception center of the Caral archaeological complex. This will cost you 5 soles. There is another option with shared taxis that drop you off directly at the reception of the archaeological complex, but this costs 20 soles per person and the taxis accommodate a maximum of 4 people.
