Diving in Palomino Islands
Diving in the sea of the Palomino Islands is a unique experience, a journey through mysterious landscapes where part of Peru's maritime history took place. From the Spanish conquest to the republican era with the Chileans in the Pacific War. Photo: Roberto Colichon This island is located on the west side of San Lorenzo Island (the largest on the Peruvian coast), belonging to the Constitutional Province of Callao, the main port of Peru. In this group of small islands, the main attraction is the more than 5 thousand sea lions that inhabit it, in addition to birds such as seagulls, pelicans, and ducks, among others. Where it takes place Diving is done in the waters surrounding the Palomino Islands, a place that was formerly used as a guano island, an activity that ended due to the decrease in birds. Distance Mostly, dives are done at a maximum depth of 15 meters and an average of 10 meters. Level To be able to do this adventure, it is necessary to have the PADI Advanced diving certification or an equivalent. Time The duration of the dive depends on what the hired agency provides. There are dives of 10, 20, and even more minutes. Season Thanks to the climate in this area, it is possible to practice this adventure sport at any time of the year. However, it is necessary to use the appropriate equipment, as the sea temperature is very low. Photo: pixabay In the district, there are different agencies or academies that provide specialized services for diving, which offer all safety measures, techniques, and appropriate equipment for this great adventure in the sea. One of the best dives on the Peruvian coast is done in Paracas, where you can find a vast variety of marine life, guano birds, sea lions, Humboldt penguins, among other species. Where It Takes Place There are 3 main beaches for practicing this adventure sport, which are: La Mina Beach: Located on the southeast side of the Paracas Peninsula. The beach has a horseshoe shape, and the surrounding hills protect it from the strong winds common in the area. Its water is very clean, crystal clear, calm, emerald in color, and has white sand substrate on its shores. In the vicinity of the resort, you can see a couple of cavities that were formerly coal mines, hence the name La Mina. Lagunilla Beach: One of the most popular beaches in the Paracas Reserve, like most resorts in the area, it is a cove for artisanal fishermen. It has a very calm sea, but caution must be taken when swimming there as one of the most abundant species are sea urchins. Mendieta Beach: Like the previous 2, it is an impressive beach, with clean and calm waters perfect for diving. Additionally, here you can find La Catedral, an impressive rock formation in the sea that broke during the earthquake of 2007. Distance The distance depends on the person's experience. Beginners in this sport are recommended to dive between 2 to 8 meters. Experienced and certified divers, on the other hand, can dive to depths of more than 20 meters. Level No experience is required to practice diving, as you can receive your first diving lesson there. All you need are basic swimming skills and, above all, the desire to live this great experience. Time Classes and diving expeditions usually last 2 and a half hours, with 20 to 30 minutes of theoretical and technical instructions. Season Any time of the year is good for exploring and diving in the beaches of Paracas. However, for perfect weather, we recommend going between December and April.
