Huaylas Valley
Description
The Callejón de Huaylas is a beautiful place, full of lagoons and impressive snow-capped peaks that will always accompany your visit to the cities of Huaraz, Huaylas, Yungay, Recuay, and Carhuaz, belonging to the Department of Ancash. Due to its beauty, the Callejón de Huaylas is one of the favorite destinations for foreign and domestic tourists, who return year after year to admire this piece of heaven that belongs to Peru.
To be exact, the Callejón de Huaylas is a valley formed by the Santa River flowing from south to north, and it is enclosed by the Cordillera Negra and the Cordillera Blanca. The latter is the mountain range that gathers the most snow-capped peaks and lagoons, with a maximum altitude exceeding 6000 meters above sea level, unlike the Cordillera Negra, whose maximum altitude is 5500 meters above sea level and presents a mountain range without snow.
How to get to the Callejón de Huaylas?
We can start from Lima on the Pan-American Highway North towards Pativilca, then continue east to enter the Andean region of Peru, precisely until Conococha, where the Santa River originates. We will then follow parallel to the river, through the center of the valley until we reach Huaraz, the capital of Ancash. This route takes approximately 6 hours and covers 400 km. It is worth taking the land route to appreciate the number of snow-capped peaks and beautiful landscapes that this part of Peru offers.
