Cycling as an alternative means of transportation
Biking as an alternative means of transportation! Hello Adventurers, we know that every day we lose a great deal of our time stuck in the middle of traffic chaos. Andrew Younghusband, a correspondent for Discovery Channel, did a report a few years ago on the traffic and vehicular congestion in Lima. Faced with this chaotic problem, our friends from 'Encuentros Sobre Ruedas' decided to find a solution; And the truth is all you need is a bicycle and the willingness to pedal. If you practice Cycling, this article is essential for you. Of course! Not everything is as nice as it seems, so don't miss all the details of this article with Peter Love and Encuentros Sobre Ruedas. Biking as an alternative means of transportation Block 1: In this program, we wanted to revalue biking as an alternative means of transportation and always through constructive criticism, we show the problem and provide the solution. Join us in this first block, yes sir! Block 2: We continue to travel through different bike lanes in Lima, encountering a series of obstacles and complex situations in the daily life of the urban cyclist... We share some reflections and also highlight the municipality that, from our point of view, is working best in this area. We are referring to the municipality of San Borja. Join us. Block 3: In this third block, we talk with Susana, who commutes daily through various streets of Lima using a bicycle as a means of transportation. She also talks to us about the benefits of doing so with a folding bike. Then we meet Carlos Rojo, who introduced the first folding bikes to Peru when no one believed in them... Many years later, they are a hit wherever they go!! The Fact: In Lima, there are over 2,200,000 vehicles in circulation and very few properly implemented bike lanes. Even though we enjoy going On Adventure outside the city, we must demand safety for cyclists and other athletes who travel through the city.
[Interview] Peter Love: Love and Passion for Adventure Cycling.
Pedro Vilchez, better known as Peter Love, is the host and founder of the cycling program 'Encuentros sobre Ruedas'. He was also a Mountain Biking guide for over 10 years, and today we talk to him to learn more about this sport and his experiences on two wheels in Peru. If you are a fan of Mountain Biking, don't miss this interview De Aventura, it's awesome. YES SIR. 'Encuentros sobre Ruedas' is a program centered around the bicycle, as it allows access to many places, encounters, journeys, and sports events. Basically, the passion for getting to know Peru, for pedaling through it, is the main reason behind the creation of the program that Peter Love now carries out. Let's now delve into Peter Love and his love for the bicycle. Photo: Encuentros Sobre Ruedas by Peter Love Tell us, Peter Love, how did you start in this sport? Wow, many years ago, I remember starting to pedal at the age of 9, when I had my first journey with my group of friends from the neighborhood who already had bicycles. That first journey was to Chorrillos, to see the sea. When we arrived and I saw the horizon, I asked myself, 'What lies beyond the horizon?' That's where it all began, and along the way, things started happening, I went from being a self-taught cyclist to something more professional, and that's how the project 'Por el polvo de los caminos' came about, aiming to unite 7 South American countries by bicycle, carrying a message of integration and cultural exchange. What have been your best sports experiences? Several, actually most of the achievements I have are personal, life achievements. Along the way, you meet many people, different places, where you can wake up one day in front of a snowy peak and the next day in front of the sea. All of that helps you understand that the world is not as wide and foreign as they say, but quite the opposite. That's when you become more sensitive and humane, leading you to appreciate day-to-day life more, respect in general, both for people and the places you pass through. Photo: Encuentros Sobre Ruedas by Peter Love What types of mountain biking are there and how do they differ? Well, there are many mountain biking modalities and nowadays they are more identified. 15 years ago, what is now the ENDURO modality was called FREERIDE. This modality is characterized by big jumps on ramps with many aerial acrobatics. We also have CROSS COUNTRY, which is a cross-country route with 8 to 10 km of ascents and descents, not as vertical or vertiginous as DOWNHILL, where you have to descend at high speed with great technique, ramps, obstacles, drops, Wall rides, etc. The modality that has had the most worldwide boom has been ENDURO, which is a synergy between Downhill and Cross Country; and Chile is leading the way. How is the development of this sport in Peru? Well, mountain biking is emerging rapidly. I remember that in Pachacamac, which was the mecca of Mountain Biking in the 90s, only 4 to 5 people used to go, it was a very small group, but now you go and see hundreds of people practicing cycling, and even events are more popular. For example, in Cusco in the mid-2000s, there wasn't as much cycling, but organized races by international cyclists like the Inca Avalanche began, and from there it grew year by year until Cusco has become the current mecca of mountain biking, both for its circuits, landscapes, and culture. It also has suitable routes for holding qualifying competitions for the cycling world championship; in these competitions, UCI points (International Cycling Union) are awarded. Photo: Encuentros Sobre Ruedas by Peter Love What do you need to start in this sport? Desire, enjoyment, PASSION as in everything. Just as 'Encuentros sobre ruedas' focuses on cycling, I am also passionate about Adventure Sports, for example, recently in Lunahuaná, we were doing Rafting with all the adrenaline of riding the rapids, it's a spectacular experience. Everything with technique, enjoyment, and passion helps you develop whether it's cycling, canoeing, paragliding, trekking, etc. What routes would you recommend for those who want to start mountain biking? Wow, we have many cycling routes from Pachacamac or El Morro Solar where you can do all levels of mountain biking. There are circuits everywhere, even urban cycling helps improve the maneuvering technique of mountain bikers, crossing shortcuts, parks, stairs, speed bumps, speed humps, etc. All of that develops the cyclist. What places have you visited thanks to cycling? Wow, cycling through South America has led me to meet incredible people and not just places. For example, in Brazil, I was invited to Club Palmeiras to give a presentation about my journey. For them, traveling cyclists have something good to share, and you see that the bicycle leads you to those kinds of encounters. Like the Iguazu Falls, the Atacama Desert, and many more. I think the bicycle is the catalyst of my life to make it more amazing because it has made me discover the world in a different way. Photo: Encuentros Sobre Ruedas by Peter Love You are the founder of Encuentros sobre Ruedas. How did the idea come about and what does it offer to adventurers? Encuentros sobre ruedas was born with the purpose of showing the public a different perspective of Peru. Because ultimately, traveling by bicycle gives you a completely different sensation, you capture colors, smells, aromas, circumstances that you don't perceive when traveling by car, motorcycle, or plane. On the other hand, on a bicycle, you absorb all of that, and from there, Encuentros sobre ruedas emerged, combined with the fact that I had been researching cycling and adventure for years. Now, in addition to journeys, we show other ways to discover Peru, like in Salcantay where we did part Off Road, part cycling, and part Trekking. What advice would you give to those who want to practice this sport? Get on a bicycle and see if you like it because it all starts with passion. If you don't feel passionate, if you don't fall in love with what you're doing, nothing works. You have to identify that because people will be happier when they identify their potentials and what they like. Like in Encuentros sobre ruedas, we have seen that it is important to show people the possibilities of adventure tourism. We know that Adventure Sports and Tourism are emerging, and now our goal is for the program to be broadcast on national television very soon. Peter Love, thank you very much for the interview :) Photo: Encuentros Sobre Ruedas by Peter Love HERE WE LEAVE YOU THE VIDEO WITH THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH PETER LOVE, YOU CAN'T MISS IT, YES SIR. 10 tips or advice for Mountain Bikers
Before leaving home to ride, read these 10 tips or advice for mountain bikers. Take into account these tips and start your biking adventure. Tips for cyclists: 1. GET INFORMED. Before leaving home to ride, look for information about routes for cyclists that you are going to do, remember that the weather is unpredictable, changes in the mountains can be quick and violent. Also, you must take into account your physical condition and preparation to carry out and complete the route you have chosen. 2. TECHNICAL CHECK. This point is basic for every cyclist, if you don't want to have unpleasant surprises during your ride, give a good check to the wheels, gears, brakes, handlebars, screws, and all aspects that you consider necessary to ensure a good ride. Also, see this advice for cyclists: how to patch a bicycle during the route. 3. CYCLIST KIT. Once the bike is ok, make sure you are ready for any unforeseen event, whether your own or a companion's. Organize a technical kit that should include patches, keys or a multi-tool, inflator, spare tube, documents, money, warm clothing, and a charged cell phone. 4. PREPARE YOUR BODY. If you are going to follow a long and demanding route, you must have good pre-ride nutrition and hydration. Consume nutritious and easily digestible foods such as bananas, orange juice, yogurt, or cereals, this will guarantee you enough energy for your biking adventure. Regarding hydration, drink water before you are thirsty (Don't overfill either) or at 20-minute intervals. Having good nutrition is one of the great tips for cyclists. 5. FOLLOW YOUR PACE. Everyone has a different style, pace, and training, accept it and do not try to keep up with others. Start slowly and gradually increase your pedaling. Do not rush or accelerate unnecessarily, you will waste energy that you will need later. If you go out in a group, regroup before and after descents. 6. CLOTHING. Light and comfortable according to the route and the season. For example, in winter, a waterproof thermal jacket is recommended to protect you from rain and wind. In addition to clothing, you must wear the mandatory safety accessories in mountain biking: helmet, goggles, gloves, and appropriate shoes. Also see this advice for cyclists: a good cycling helmet. 7. WEEKLY TRAINING. Many only go biking on weekends. Perhaps training during the week is complicated for some, but riding for an hour two days a week will greatly help your progress in technique, physical fitness, and prevent injuries on longer routes. 8. DON'T RUSH. We have all felt that anger when another cyclist passes us, and the first thing we do is go after him or her so as not to be left behind. Mistake, stay calm, we already said that everyone has their own performance and speed, the best way to progress in this adventure sport is to maintain your pace according to your limits. 9. ROUTE. Nature is very important for everyone but especially for adventure sports enthusiasts, as thanks to it we can enjoy incredible landscapes and routes. Respect it and do not cross "any" path that comes to mind, do not skid unnecessarily, and protect the places you pass through. And to finish these tips for cyclists: 10. CLEANLINESS. After a good ride, give your bike a light cleaning. Mud, dust, and grease are the main causes of deterioration of some important parts of our bike. Clean it by spraying water, avoiding the pedals, gears, and chain. After removing the dirt, you can add a few drops of oil to the chain and sprockets. Follow some of these tips for cyclists and start your adventure.
Inca Avalanche 2015
Last weekend we left Lima loaded with excitement to experience a super Mountain Biking adventure. This competition was none other than the Inca Avalanche 2015, which took place in the imperial city of Ollantaytambo. We traveled about 1 hour and a half from Cusco to Ollantaytambo; There we spent the whole weekend surrounded by adrenaline, excitement, and cyclists from all over the world. This is the 15th edition of the Inca Avalanche held in Peru and no Peruvian had ever won it before, until now... First things first, What is the Inca Avalanche? This race is considered the most extreme mountain biking competition held in the Peruvian Andes. In addition to being extreme, it is unique, as it is a mass start, enduro style, downhill race that is not divided into stages, but is a continuous race for 1500 meters of vertical descent during 25 to 30 minutes depending on the competitor's level. The starting point of the race was in the town of Abra de Málaga at 4550 meters above sea level, right behind the snow-capped Verónica. Competitors could use any part of the mountain to find the best possible route to the finish point, located in the town of Tacnacc at 2800 meters above sea level. 180 cyclists from different parts of the world participated: Bolivia, USA, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, Canada, England, Germany, and of course from Peru. Riders from Lima, Arequipa, Carhuaz, Juliaca, Apurimac, Abancay, Puno, and Cusco were our national representatives. The competition was divided into two dates: One on Saturday, where the qualifying descent would take place to establish the starting order, and another on Sunday, the final day of the Inca Avalanche race. Saturday 16, qualifying day. The meeting point for the riders was the central square of Ollantaytambo, where they would board vans, buses, and trucks heading to Abra de Málaga. The first qualifying run would take place at 11 am and the second at 3 pm, the best time of the two runs would establish the starting order for the race day. It was an intense, tough, and challenging day on the way. Before the start of the first run, an offering of thanks to the Apus for the protection of the riders was made. Immediately after, the first qualifying run would begin. With all the cyclists in their positions, the first qualifying descent began; the mass of riders set off with great aggression regardless of the muddy path that awaited them. After 18 km of descent, the best time was achieved by the Peruvian Alejandro Paz with 21 minutes and 17 seconds, ensuring him a starting position in the front row (15 cyclists per row) for the final. Sunday 17, Grand Final The big day arrived, from 8 in the morning the cyclists gathered in the square to head to the starting point. The final would start at 12:30 pm and it would be a single descent, a single attempt, it was the moment of 'All or Nothing', 'Now or Never'. Up to that moment, the favorites were the Peruvian Alejandro Paz and the Brazilian Luana Oliveira after winning their respective qualifiers. The start was spectacular, seeing 180 cyclists rapidly leaving in mass seeking an almost impossible descent, through mountains, slopes, ramps, and trails that crossed their path, was literally insane. Among the riders were men, women, and children as young as 12 years old. At the finish line, more than 150 spectators were waiting eagerly to see all the cyclists cross that final line. The first to arrive was Alejandro Paz with a time of 22 minutes and 3 seconds, closely followed by Yannick Wende with 22 minutes and 59 seconds. The Brazilian Luana Oliveira reached the finish line despite a flat rear tire. Around 2 pm, the race would end amidst an atmosphere of euphoria, fatigue, and camaraderie. The winners were: A) In the Men's Elite category: Alejandro Paz. Yannick Wende. Mitch Chubey. Gerardo Zambrano. Sadhu Low. B) In the Women's Elite category: Joni Wirts. Estela Acurio. Christine Dern. Luana Oliveira. Nicole Koch As part of the Inca Avalanche awards, a ramp jumping exhibition was held in the central square of Ollantaytambo. After the award ceremony, the closing party began with a fireworks display over the sky of Ollantaytambo and continued with music by the group Maná performed by Fer from the program Yo Soy. ADVENTURE FACT: This is the first year, after 15 editions of the Inca Avalanche in Peru, that a Peruvian cyclist has won, so we want to congratulate our champion Alejandro Paz for this tremendous achievement. How to patch your tires on the go
One of the most common issues in cycling is getting a flat tire while on the road. Here in Peru, this happens frequently due to the routes, paths, and slopes that many cyclists traverse. In this post, we will show you how to solve this problem in an appropriate and simple way. So pay attention and follow these steps for any emergency on the road. Photo: Bicimecanica First, let's see what tools we need to assemble our Flat Tire Repair Kit: Patches, tire levers, portable inflator, glue, and sandpaper. Photo: fransaiz 1- Remove the inner tube. Using the tire levers, we need to take out the flat inner tube from the tire. What you need to do is insert one end of the tire lever between the rim and the edge of the tire, and lever it to dismount the tire. Sometimes it is necessary to loosen the brakes a bit to remove the tire more easily. Photo: enbicipormadrid 2 - Locate the puncture. Inflate the inner tube enough so that the air pressure can escape from the tube and allow us to quickly locate the puncture. To find the puncture, you must be patient and go through your tube inch by inch. You can locate it more easily by submerging the tube in water or simply passing the tube close to your ear until you hear and feel the air escaping. Photo: pad3.whstatic 3- Check your tire. Once we have located the puncture, we proceed to check the tire to find the object that caused the hole. If we find it, we remove it and continue checking the rest of the tire to prevent any other punctures. Most punctures occur on the outer part of the tire, but sometimes, the spokes of our tires can also cause punctures, so it is advisable to use protection between the rim and the tube. Photo: 4.bp.blogspot 4- Apply the patch. This is the part where you must pay attention to all the details. To stick the patch, you must first gently sand the area around the hole so that the patch adheres better. Second, you must keep the tube taut so that the patch sticks correctly. Then, add a good amount of glue to the puncture area and let it dry for 30 seconds to 1 and a half minutes. Now, place the patch and press firmly on the tube for approximately 10 minutes. Photo: cyclecity 5- Remount your tire. To do this, slightly inflate your tube. First, we mount the tire on the rim. Then we insert the tube between the tire and the rim, starting by locating the correct position of the valve (or Presta valve). Finally, we just need to adjust all tire components properly. Inflate the tire and roll it to naturally fit the rim. Now, just put your tire back on your bike and inflate it to continue your journey. Photo: surconewyork Remember to always carry the appropriate protection and your anti-flat kit so that nothing stops your adventures. See also: John Tomac: The Essence of Mountain Bike. "First Cycling Rally: Amazon Mountain Bikers Challenge"
On Saturday, November 29th, the first mountain biking rally "Amazon Mountain Bikers Challenge" took place in the town of San Roque de Cumbaza, located an hour away from the city of Tarapoto. Part of the De Aventura team was present to participate in the event and share their experience of this new jungle adventure. It all started on Saturday at 7:30 in the morning, participants gathered at the meeting point in the city of Tarapoto to be taken to the event location. During the journey, we were able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of our jungle, full of peace, nature, life, and a hint of mystery. Upon arrival in San Roque, we found a perfect setting for mountain biking; the weather was mild, not too sunny, with a light drizzle. The 21 km competition route was filled with inclines, descents, flat stretches, narrow paths, trails, and an incredible amount of vegetation surrounding us. This route was specially created for this mountain biking rally and it was truly amazing. Many cyclists from different parts of Peru were amazed by this beautiful yet challenging course. Participants unloaded their bikes and began fine-tuning the last details before the start. In the moments leading up to the rally, there was an excellent atmosphere, full of camaraderie, excitement, adventure, and great vibes. Then came the starting time, around 11 am, and the cyclists set off in groups, according to categories: 1.- Open 18 to 29 years. 2.- Open master 30 years and older. 3.- Open women 18 years and older. 4.- Open novices 18 years and older. 5.- Novice Junior 15 to 17 years. There were over 50 competitors at the starting line ready to pedal away. The beginning of the rally set the pace for many cyclists, with the most experienced and prepared taking a slight lead in the first kilometers. During the journey, some cyclists faced technical issues and fell behind, but thanks to the locals who provided assistance to many cyclists, they were able to continue and complete the race. After completing the 21 km route, an exhibition of BMX jumps and maneuvers began, while the rally competitors rested, regained strength, and prepared for the awards ceremony. The best time in the competition was 69 minutes achieved by Elmer Gonzales Ocas, followed by Luis Fuster in second place with 72 minutes, and Lenin Mesias Jimenez in third place with 76 minutes. For us, it was an unforgettable experience, not only because of the organization, the route, the atmosphere, the participants, and the care for nature, but above all, for the unity that a demanding sport like cycling created. The next day, the 4th edition of the "Amazon Race Forest" took place, featuring a circuit of three categories: 10, 21, and 42 km, filled with jungle, mountain, and scorching heat, making this mountain race (Trail Running) an exceptional challenge for all runners. Finally, we want to thank Amazon Mountain Bikers and Bruno Mendoza for the excellent organization and all the facilities provided during our stay in Tarapoto. Undoubtedly, when things are done right, great results are achieved. We hope that adventure sports continue to be promoted throughout the country and that we become more adventurers forming this great community. See also: John Tomac: The Essence of Mountain Bike. Mountain Unicycling
Everyone is familiar with mountain biking, an extremely demanding and risky sport. But as if it weren't fun enough, a new modality has emerged: Mountain Unicycling, an adventure sport that involves traversing rugged terrain on a unicycle. This sport, also known as 'muni', is carried out on terrain similar to that of a mountain bike. However, muni requires much more attention and balance from the athletes. Photo: KrisHolm Muni unicycles typically have a special design: They are equipped with strong axles, large tires, high-grip pedals, and sturdy frames. Some are also equipped with a tire or disc brakes, with the lever mounted under the saddle nose. The brake primarily helps to compensate for the downhill force, while more experienced riders also use it to slow down or stop. For those looking to get started in this sport, they will need to practice a lot and master both balance and physical performance, as like mountain biking, this sport requires a lot of strength and endurance. Photo: Nozzhawk.com The unicycle also requires a special design to make the most of the terrain where it is practiced. Therefore, a mountain unicycle should have strong tires, sturdy frames, high-grip pedals, ergonomic seat, among other features. Some models come with disc brakes or rim brakes for maximum safety. These systems are controlled through a lever mounted just below the saddle head where the rider will sit. Photo: Learnthis.ca There are already some brands dedicated to designing these mountain unicycles such as: Kris Holm, Nimbus, and Torker. When you go to buy a mountain unicycle for the first time, one of the most important qualities to consider is the size. The right size will depend on your height, leg length, weight, etc. Regarding the price of unicycles, they range from $300 to $900, depending on the size, brand, tire quality, and other considerations. Photo: Thatsxtreme Thinking of giving Muni a try? Remember that the first step is to practice on flat terrain before venturing onto any hills or mountains. At first, it will take a lot of practice and effort, but once you master it, nothing can stop you. John Tomac: The Essence of Mountain Biking.
A bike, a slope, and a goal; that was all John Tomac needed to be happy. Considered a legend of Mountain Bike (MTB) for his tenacity, versatility, power, and bravery; John achieved 10 national championships (USA) in almost every discipline he competed in during his 20 years as a professional elite. photo: www.galeon.com This legend was born in 1967 in the city of Owosso, Michigan, and from a young age, he knew the love of his life; it was small, light, and had two wheels, that BMX he rode at eight years old on his parents' farm captured his heart. At 17, John was already competing professionally in this category, but gradually transitioned to longer distances, eventually reaching Mountain Bike (MTB). Photo: retrobike.co.uk By 1988, Tomac was fully dedicated to MTB, winning the national championships in that category that year and the following. Just before achieving his greatest feat in 1991, when he became the world champion in Cross Country (XC) and the world runner-up in Downhill (DH) in Italy, using the same bike, something that would be unimaginable in our days. photo: esmtb.com Tomac won the XC world championship in 1992 using a completely rigid bike with road handlebars, a setup he had implemented since 1990. That same year, he won the overall World Cup, earning a well-deserved place in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Photo: esmtb.com His excellent physical condition and great technique for descending steep slopes at high speed led him to be considered the best cyclist in the history of MTB and to be part of great teams like Yeti, Tioga-Raleigh, Giant, and Tomac Racing. During the golden age of North American riders, John had to compete against other MTB stars like Tinker Juarez or Ned Overend, with whom he had glorious battles. His last medal at the World Championships was in 1997, achieving the runner-up in Switzerland in the DH discipline. Photo: Tumbler.com He retired from competition in 2000, although he returned to compete four years later, winning the Kamikaze Downhill that year and the following. Photo: sicklines.com John Tomac has been an inspiration to many athletes; his drive, determination, and daring are the essence of every MTB cyclist. We can only imagine what Tomac could have achieved in our days with the technological advancements in the sport, but one thing is certain: mountain biking is a sport that runs in the blood. Mike Horn: A Legend of Adventure.
Mike Horn is a legendary explorer, considered by many to be a living legend of adventure. It's not hard to understand why, after sailing around the world following the equator line, trekking and swimming the Amazon, facing the North Pole in the dead of winter, or climbing K2 without supplemental oxygen; call him what you want, we know he will continue to live for adventure. Born to university professors, Mike was born in Johannesburg on July 16, 1966. During his childhood, he enjoyed outdoor climbing, long bike rides, and fishing with his family. Mike was a rebellious young man, but it was during his military service where he learned to survive. At 18, he was in Angola: "I discovered that one will do anything to stay alive." He attended Stellenbosch University in Western Cape, South Africa, where he studied Human Movement Sciences. He worked in sports science until he was 24, when he resigned and moved to Switzerland. From that moment on, Mike embarked on a myriad of expeditions around the world. He married Cathy Horn and has two daughters, Annika and Jessica. Currently, Horn sails the oceans as the captain of the expedition vessel "Pangea." Expeditions: Amazon Mike's first major expedition was in April 1997: It was a 6-month solo journey through South America. He started on foot from the Pacific Ocean until reaching the source of the Amazon River in the Peruvian Andes. Once there, he descended the 7,000 km of the Amazon River on a Hydrospeed, all the way to the Atlantic. Latitud Zero His next journey was in 1999, this time Mike embarked on an 18-month trip, circumnavigating the world along the equator line. His journey was on foot and by sail. He started from Gabon and crossed the Atlantic to Brazil by sail. Then he crossed Brazil and Ecuador by canoe, bicycle, and on foot. After crossing the Pacific, he reached Indonesia through the Galapagos Islands. He then crossed Borneo and Sumatra on foot before crossing the Indian Ocean. Finally, he crossed Africa on foot through the Congo and Gabon, where he completed the first solo circumnavigation of the world along the Equator line. Arktos This was an expedition in 2004 in which Mike circumnavigated the world in the Arctic Circle. It was a two-year and three-month journey that he did alone. He couldn't use any motorized transportation along the impossible 20,000 km route. Mike's route was as follows: He started from Norway at Cape North and continued through Greenland, Alaska, Canada, the Bering Strait, and Russian Siberia before reaching Cape North. North Pole For this adventure, Mike was accompanied by Norwegian explorer Borge Ousland. Together, they embarked on a 60-day ski journey without dogs or motorized transportation through the Arctic night. For two months, the pair walked in total darkness, often on thin ice. Himalayas In 2007, Horn and three other professional climbers reached the summit of Gasherbrum 1 (8,035m) and Gasherbrum 2 (8,068m) without the need for supplemental oxygen. Initially, they were planning to climb four Himalayan mountains, but the bad weather prevented them. Mike used his inner voice to reach the summits. Pangea Recently, Mike became the captain of the expedition vessel "Pangea" and invited Young Explorers aged 15 to 20 from all over the world to travel across oceans and continents. Horn and his expedition carry out ecological and social projects under the motto "Explore, Learn, and Act." Just like Mike, discover your next adventure destination and share your experience with us. Mountain Bike: How Many Modalities Are There?
Mountain biking (MTB) is considered an Adventure Sport, a competitive cycling done on natural circuits, usually through forests on narrow paths with steep climbs and very fast descents. In Peru, we have many routes for practicing cycling, here are some highlights. Some specialties and competitions are regulated by the UCI (International Cycling Union), while others are held in a friendly manner. For the practice of this sport, the use of a full-face helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, back protectors, neck protectors, gloves, and suitable shoes is essential. XC - Cross Country The most popular and common modality of MTB. The one seen in Mountain Bike competitions and practiced by the vast majority of users.
