Trekking in Olleros to Chavín

The town of Chavín de Huantar is rich in history, legends, and customs. It is located in the district of the same name, province of Huari, in the department of Ancash. The final destination for this new adventure is the archaeological monument of Chavín de Huantar. Throughout the journey, we will reach a maximum altitude of 4,700 meters above sea level.

This trekking is a way to get to know and appreciate the famous city of Chavín de Huantar. Undoubtedly, reaching it on foot does not require too much difficulty, as it can be done in three days after passing the highest point called Yanashayash, we will ascend to the archaeological complex. The trekking can be organized with mules or with the so-called llama-trek, which consists of hiking accompanied by llamas and donkeys that carry our luggage to the archaeological complex.

The route from Olleros to Chavín de Huantar

We depart from the city of Huaraz and take a bus heading south of the city until we reach the district of Olleros. The road is about 23 km long and takes only half an hour to travel. There, we are at an approximate altitude of 3,420 meters above sea level. Then we arrive at the town of Canrey Chico, where the trekking begins. After three hours of walking, we reach the town of Sacracancha, at about 4,080 meters above sea level. It is advisable to set up the first camping tent there.

The next day we continue the journey until we reach Yanashalla, at about 4,700 meters above sea level. From there, the path zigzags until we reach the town of Shongopampa. Once there, night will have caught us, and it is time to set up the second camping tent.

On the third day, at about 4,088 meters above sea level, we set off without further delay to Chavín. The path descends towards Shongo, and after four hours, we reach the Archaeological Monument of Chavín, located at about 3,150 meters above sea level.

The climate in Chavín de Huantar

In general, the climate in the province of Huari is temperate, semi-tropical Andean. The maximum temperature during the day is 25°C and 12°C at night, with clear skies providing beautiful starry nights. The best time to visit Chavín is between the months of May and September.

From October to April is the rainy season, so it is not very advisable to go during those dates. The temperature drops to 0°C in winter.
