Trekking in Autisha Canyon

📝 Route Description

Trekking or in this case it is better to call it hiking, is a very extreme sport when it comes to exploring the mysterious Autisha Canyon, located in the town of the same name. It is an expedition to the center of the earth, where underground lagoons, waterfalls, and terrifying bats are found.

The journey is short but very dangerous if the correct safety measures are not taken. Along the way, you pass through the bat cave, where you will inevitably have to see these terrifying animals. As this place is an abandoned mine, there are stairs and hanging bridges to descend, but these are very old, adding more adrenaline to this adventure.

Once you reach the deepest part of the canyon, you will discover the magical lagoon and the impressive underground waterfall of Sheke. To exit the canyon, you must pass through the interior of an old water dam.

Where is the trekking done

This adventure sport takes place in the Autisha Canyon, where there used to be a Hydroelectric Plant, which is said to have been abandoned in the mid-1950s. The place still preserves all its corridors, both internal and external, which are explored in a great adventure.

Distance

You descend more than 120 meters, to the deepest part of the canyon.

Time

The descent walk lasts between 15 to 20 minutes.

Level

No experience is required, but the necessary safety measures must be taken, preferably hiring a specialized agency in the area.

Season

The best season is between the months of June to early December, as the locality experiences intense rains between January and May.

What to bring

  • Trekking shoes or high-top sneakers
  • Small backpack
  • Headlamp (mandatory)
  • Cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Light clothing for the day
  • Warm clothing for the afternoon

Recommendations

This adventure is preferably for people over 18 years old, who are not afraid of bats or abysses. If you do have these fears, it is a good experience to overcome them.

In the underground lake of Sheke, it is possible to take a refreshing swim in its waters, so we recommend bringing swimwear so you can also experience this adventure tourism.
