The XI edition of the national surf championship "Billabong Cabo Blanco" will have a top prize of $10,000. The most outstanding surfers have been competing since January 28th and today, January 29th, at the fishing cove of Cabo Blanco beach in Piura.
There are 48 participants competing for the cash prize. The tournament will be held in heats of six athletes each. The waiting period began on December 15, 2013, and based on satellite reports of the sea, these dates were chosen for the championship due to optimal conditions.
Considered one of the best waves in the world, compared to Hawaii or Australia, this wave in northern Peru breaks over a sandy bottom forming a perfect tube, where even under ideal conditions, a surfer can stay in the tube for eight to fifteen seconds, a remarkable time in surfing.
Among the competitors are surfers Javier Swayne, Álvaro Malpartida, and Cristóbal De Col, the latter being the current champion.
