Description
Route points: Huaraz - Chavin (by vehicle) Chavin - Pueblo Jato - Shongo - Yanashallash Pass - Sacracancha - Canrey Chico - Olleros - San Pedro - Huaraz (by bicycle).
Biking distance: Approx. 65 km (38 km in the mountains).
After the meeting at the Adventure Park (Jr Mariscal Caceres) - Huaraz; we will head to the bus terminal towards Chavin. From there, we depart towards Chavin. Approximately 3 hours of travel to reach Chavin around 8:00 am; after a light breakfast, we prepare our equipment and start the journey westward (uphill) through a dirt road to the town of Jato; here we will take a break before continuing to push the bike through a pre-Inca trail to the Yanashallash Pass (4700 meters above sea level) (in some parts we can ride).
From the pass, we will descend through the pre-Inca trail that remains intact in some sections. The descent, practically steep, will be until Sacracancha (usually the camping site on a trek Olleros-Chavin), from here we continue through a dirt road to the town of Canrey Chico, after a short break we continue to the town of Olleros and descend to the San Pedro Bridge and continue riding through the road to Huaraz.
WHAT TO BRING
- The descent from Yanashallash Pass to Sacracancha is technical, it is advisable to bring and use a helmet (VERY IMPORTANT!!!), knee pads, and elbow pads (optional).
- A couple of inner tubes, plenty of patches, and a good inflator. There are small stones that can puncture our tires.
- Basic tools, spoke wrench, and chain breaker.
- Rain gear, such as a waterproof jacket and/or poncho (plastic or waterproof), windbreaker jacket (it gets windy during the descent).
- Medicines, motion sickness pills, Andrews salts, menthol, insect repellent, sunscreen, pH.
- Light snacks such as: dried fruits, peanuts, cookies, energy bars, bread or sandwiches, chocolates, carry liquids in quantity, mineral water, Gatorade, powdered drink mix, lemon and sugar, to avoid carrying too much weight during the ride.
- Trash bag.
- Camera, batteries, flashlight, matches, sunglasses, cap.
